I have previously explored how dance is a wonderful tool for pregnancy and birth.
However, did you know that dance is also great for new moms and their babies?
One of the biggest benefits is bonding with baby. If mom danced during her pregnancy then baby will already be familiar with the movements. This can be comforting to him or her. When mom holds baby close (whether carrying baby like in the video above) or in a carrier while dancing, this creates a womb like environment that can be soothing to baby.
Regular, gentle exercise can give mom a great endorphin release along with several other feel good hormones. This can help ward off or reduce postpartum mood issues. Attending dance class regularly can be a great way to get out of the house and find a mom community. This can help to normalize the intense time period of early mothering.
This is a time when Mom can feel strong in her postpartum body and it’s capabilities. Regular dance can help mom to regain muscle tone and strength at her own pace. Baby will also benefit physically. If mom wears baby in a sling then baby will learn balance and gain core physical strength.
For some moms the feeling of being in control of her dance movements helps reduce the feeling “out of control” or uncertainty that you can feel as a new parent. It can also help mom to stay in her feeling (right) brain instead of her thinking (left) brain. The right brain lets the body take over and allows the mind to step back to a place of mindfulness instead of trying to control or fear the experience.
Here are some great moves for new moms to try:
- Hip circles
- Figure 8 hip movements
- Adding a bounce during hip circles (this can be especially soothing to baby)
- Rocking hips from side to side
- Hip knocks and shimmies
If you aren’t sure what these movements look like then check out one of our Dancing For Birth TM classes to learn more!
