When people imagine becoming a doula, they often picture supporting families during labour, cuddling newborns, or helping exhausted parents through the early weeks after birth. And while those moments are some of the most rewarding parts of the profession, they are only part of the job. Many new doulas are surprised by how much of this profession involves running a business.
Whether you dream of running your own doula business or joining an established agency, there is an entire side of the profession that many new doulas don’t expect. Because of this, we created our Doula Business Blueprint course that is part of our certification program.
Being a Great Doula Doesn’t Automatically Build a Great Business
You can be compassionate, knowledgeable, skilled, and an incredible support person. But if families can’t find you, don’t understand your services, or aren’t confident booking you, it becomes difficult to build a sustainable career. Just as learning how to support families is essential, learning how to build a professional practice is equally important.
Business duties can include:
- Sending invoices.
- Managing your calendar.
- Networking with healthcare providers.
- Marketing your services.
- Maintaining your website and social media.
- Filing taxes and tracking expenses.
- Writing contracts.
Many experienced doulas will tell you they spend almost as much time running their business as they do supporting families.
Building Trust Starts Before You’re Hired
One of the first skills every doula needs to develop is learning how to communicate professionally. Families often meet several doulas before making a decision. That means consultations and client communication matter. Your website, policies, contracts, and follow-up communication all help families decide whether you’re someone they can trust. Professionalism begins long before labour starts.
Marketing Doesn’t Have to Feel Salesy
Many new doulas feel uncomfortable promoting themselves. The good news is…marketing isn’t about convincing people to hire you. It’s about helping families understand who you are, what you offer, and how you can help them. Sharing educational information, building relationships within your community, and communicating authentically often become the most effective forms of marketing.
Financial Planning Matters
As a self-employed doula, you’ll also need to think about saving for taxes, budgeting for business expenses, liability insurance, continuing education, and other related expenses. These aren’t the most exciting parts of the job—but they’re essential if you want your business to thrive.
You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Through Trial and Error
When Kathy and I first became doulas, we learned much of the business side through experience. Sometimes that meant making mistakes or spending hours researching things we wished someone had simply taught us. We quickly realized that business skills are just as important as perinatal knowledge if you want a long, fulfilling career.
That’s one of the reasons we created our Doula Business Blueprint course.
Rather than expecting students to figure out the business side on their own after graduation, we wanted to give them practical tools to confidently begin building a professional practice from the very beginning.
Throughout the Business Blueprint, students learn about topics such as:
- Setting up their business
- Deciding whether to work independently or with an agency.
- Creating a sustainable doula business.
- Professional communication.
- Client consultations.
- Contracts and documentation.
- Marketing and networking.
- Time management.
- Setting healthy boundaries.
- Financial planning.
- Building confidence as a new professional.
Because becoming a doula isn’t just about attending births or supporting postpartum families. At the end of the day, the business side exists for one reason: so you can continue supporting families.
When your business is organized, professional, and sustainable, you’re able to focus your energy where it matters most—providing compassionate, thoughtful care to the families who have placed their trust in you.
That’s the kind of career every doula deserves to build.
