Choosing a doula certification program is an exciting step—but it can also feel overwhelming. There are many training programs available, each with its own teaching style, curriculum, and certification requirements. At first glance, they can seem very similar. So naturally, one of the questions we hear most often is:
“What makes your program different?”
When we created the Birth to Baby Doula Certification Program, we didn’t ask ourselves, “How can we create another certification?” We asked a different question: “What would have helped us feel truly prepared when we became doulas?” That question shaped every decision we made.
We Focus on More Than Certification
Of course, our goal is to help students become certified, but that’s not our ultimate goal. Our goal is to help students become confident, compassionate, career-ready doulas. There is a big difference between completing a certification program and feeling ready to support your very first family. Everything we teach is designed to help bridge that gap.
We Teach the Whole Journey
Many doulas eventually choose to specialize in either birth or postpartum support. We think that’s wonderful, but we also believe every doula benefits from understanding the entire perinatal journey into parenthood. Pregnancy influences birth, which in turn influences postpartum. And postpartum experiences are often shaped by what happened during pregnancy and labour. Families don’t experience these stages as separate events. Neither should their doula’s education. That’s why every student in our program learns about pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, newborn care, and infant feeding, regardless of which area they eventually choose to focus on.
We Teach Students How to Think—Not What to Memorize
One of our core beliefs is that becoming a great doula isn’t about memorizing scripts or having the perfect answer for every situation. The best doulas know how to think critically, ask thoughtful questions, adapt to changing situations, and recognize when another professional should become involved. Throughout the program, we encourage students to develop professional judgment—not simply memorize information. That confidence becomes invaluable when you’re supporting real families.
Mentorship Is Part of the Learning
No classroom can prepare you for every situation you’ll encounter. That’s why we believe mentorship is one of the most valuable parts of becoming a doula. Students don’t simply attend training weekends and complete assignments on their own. Throughout the certification process, they receive ongoing guidance, opportunities to debrief their experiences, monthly check-ins, and continued support as they begin working with families. We know what it’s like to wonder,
“Did I handle that well?”
“What would an experienced doula have done?”
No new doula should feel like they have to figure everything out alone.
We Prepare You for the Business Side of Doula Work
Supporting families is only one part of being a doula. Running a successful practice is another. Many new doulas are surprised by how much time they spend communicating with clients, conducting consultations, writing contracts, managing schedules, marketing their services, and organizing their business. That’s why our students complete the Doula Business Blueprint, where we cover practical topics like consultations, professional communication, contracts, marketing, networking, and building a sustainable business.
We don’t just want you to become certified; we want you to build a career you genuinely enjoy.
We Believe Caring for Doulas Is Just as Important
Being a doula is incredibly meaningful work. It can also be emotionally demanding. Over the years, we’ve seen talented doulas leave the profession because they were exhausted, overwhelmed, or burnt out. That’s one of the reasons we intentionally include discussions about self-care, healthy boundaries, compassion fatigue, and creating a sustainable career. Taking care of yourself is part of being a great doula.
We Keep Our Cohorts Small
Learning to become a doula is personal. Students need opportunities to ask questions, practice new skills, receive feedback, and build relationships with both instructors and classmates. That’s why we intentionally keep our training cohorts small. A smaller group creates a supportive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to participate, practice, and grow with confidence.
We Teach From Experience
Everything we teach has been shaped by years of supporting families. It’s been refined through attending births, providing postpartum care, mentoring doulas, teaching prenatal education, and growing a collaborative doula agency. We’ve seen what new doulas struggle with, and listened to the questions they ask. Our curriculum reflects those experiences.

At the heart of our program is a simple belief.
Families deserve doulas who feel prepared:
Prepared to adapt when plans change.
