When people think about becoming a doula, they often focus on choosing the right certification program. They compare curriculum, tuition, training hours, and certification requirements. Those things are all important.
But there’s one part of becoming a doula that’s often overlooked—and it can make all the difference in how confident you feel when you begin supporting families.
Mentorship.
No matter how comprehensive a training program is, there are some things that can only be learned through experience. Every birth is different. Every postpartum family has different needs. Every client asks different questions.
As a new doula, there will be moments when you think:
“Is this normal?”
“How would an experienced doula handle this?”
“Did I support that family the best way I could?”
Those questions are completely normal. In fact, asking them is part of becoming a thoughtful, reflective doula.
Confidence Grows Through Conversation
One of the greatest benefits of mentorship is having someone you trust to talk through real-life situations. Sometimes you need practical advice, or you need reassurance, or you want to celebrate a success with someone who understands exactly what it took to get there.
Mentorship provides a safe place to ask questions, reflect on experiences, and continue growing long after class ends.
Mentorship Supports More Than Clinical Skills
Being a doula isn’t only about understanding labour or newborn care. Mentors often help newer doulas with things like:
- Preparing for consultations.
- Navigating challenging client situations.
- Setting healthy professional boundaries.
- Communicating with healthcare providers.
- Building confidence.
- Preventing burnout.
- Growing a sustainable business.
- Reflecting on difficult or emotional experiences.
These conversations are often just as valuable as learning new comfort measures or feeding techniques.
A Safe Place to Learn
One of the most valuable parts of mentorship is knowing you don’t have to have all the answers. You can ask questions without feeling judged. You can talk through difficult situations. You can celebrate successes and learn from challenges. Having someone beside you who has walked the path before can make those early years of practice feel much less overwhelming.
Our Philosophy on Mentorship
When Kathy and I designed the Birth to Baby Doula Certification Program, we knew we wanted students to leave with more than knowledge. We wanted them to leave with support. Because becoming a confident doula doesn’t happen the day you receive your certificate. It happens through experience, reflection, continued learning, and having trusted people you can turn to along the way.
We believe mentorship helps bridge the gap between learning about doula work and confidently doing doula work. That’s why mentorship isn’t simply an “extra” to us—it’s an important part of helping new doulas grow into compassionate, skilled professionals.
Mentorship Isn’t About Having Someone Give You All the Answers
One of the biggest misconceptions about mentorship is that it’s simply having an experienced doula tell you what to do. While there are certainly times when you’ll need practical advice or guidance, the best mentors do something even more valuable—they help you learn how to think like a doula.
Instead of immediately providing answers, a mentor might ask questions like:
- What are you noticing about this situation?
- What concerns you most?
- What does the client seem to need right now?
- What options could you offer this family?
- What is within your scope of practice, and what might require a referral to another professional?
These conversations help develop critical thinking, clinical judgment, confidence, and professional decision-making. Over time, you become less reliant on having someone tell you exactly what to do and more confident in your own ability to assess situations, support families thoughtfully, and recognize when to seek additional guidance.
That’s one of the greatest gifts a mentor can offer—not just answers for today, but the confidence and judgment you’ll carry with you throughout your entire career.
